“…the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how.”
(Mark 4:27)
People can’t save people. We cannot give the gift of salvation to someone else. We can sow seeds of salvation, but it is God who makes them take root, grow and bear fruit. “A man scatters seed on the ground. Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how” (Mark 4:26-28). Wow! This is a description of the gospel message. The passage of Mark 4:24-28 focuses on the mysterious power of the seed.
Oh, if we will only sow the life-giving seeds of salvation by sharing our faith with others! Why don’t we do it more? God commands us to shine, not save! Jesus saves! God calls His people “the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14) and to carry on His work here on earth. “Let your light shine before men that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven”(Matthew 5:16).
We have opportunities all day, every day, to sow seeds of life into the lives of others. We are commanded to do it. “Jesus told his disciples, ‘All authority in heaven and earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations…’” (Matthew 28:18-19). The burden is not on us to make sure the people are saved. It’s through the power and grace of God that people are saved. “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith –and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God, not by works so than no one can boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9). Just as a seed grows in fertile soil, secretly and gradually, so does the word of God work in a sinner’s heart.
When we sow, God will be with us every step of the way. “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matthew 28:20).When we are shopping, especially in our own neighborhood grocery stores, purchasing gas for our cars, dropping off our dry cleaning – you name it – we have divine appointments set up for us to share the Good News of Jesus Christ. Also, those favorite places we shop are ripe for developing fruit-bearing relationships with employees, managers and store owners. We can let them know the love of Christ by our courtesy and kindness in the way we act and the words we speak to them. We can pray for them in private and even in public, to influence them.
We have no idea how God will use our faithfulness and our obedience!“…the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how” (Mark 4:27). If we will only sow the seed!
Think about a baby growing in a mother’s womb. It is God who makes pregnancy possible. I know women who have taken fertility medications for years and never conceived. When I reached a point where we realized I had to take extra hormones to conceive, I had a friend who called herself “Fertile Myrtle” because she was popping out babies, and I’m not kidding. On the other hand, I know women who have been on birth control pills and gotten pregnant!
So how does the gift of an unborn baby grow inside the mother? How? Only God knows. The mother does not know how, just as the gift of the gospel of Jesus Christ grows in the heart of a sinner – it is by God’s sovereign grace.
