The Reason

We've all heard the phrase during the month of December:  "Jesus is the Reason for the Season."  Right?  Actually, even though it may be overused and excused, that is the origin of the reason: celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ who came to earth to take away the sins of the world. Yes, it's the season to celebrate His birth and His transforming power to all who believe in Him. He destroys the devil's work. Right? That's pure Scripture right there.

The "Ho Ho Ho Red Suit Santa Claus who knows all things" part of the world's seasonal celebration isn't in my Bible. I've looked for Santa there, and he's just not there.

But God is. He is the  Almighty Creator of the universe and owns everything it contains. God's own words literally are the Bible.

 Look at this:
"The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands. And He is not served by human hands, as if He needed anything, because He gives all people life and breath and everything else. From one man He made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and He determined the times set for them and the places they should live. God did this so that people would seek Him and perhaps reach out for Him though He is not far from us. For in Him we live and move and have our being. As some of your own poets have said, ' We are His offspring.'" (Acts 17: 24-28)

Whew!  God has an overflow of supernatural love and specific care for each of His children! Isn't that a great reason to celebrate His birth? To be thanking Him for the gifts of His grace and love? To be grateful to have life and have it in abundance? To rejoice in His faithfulness to keep His promises to us?

And so we celebrate His birth every December as we remember who He is and what He has done for us.

"This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.

But after he had considered this, and angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, 'Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins.

"All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 'The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel -- which means 'God with us."   (Matthew 1:18-23)
Jesus was born in Bethlehem; His mother Mary "wrapped Him in cloths and placed Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn." (Luke 2:7)

Jesus came to earth while still the King of Glory, but humbled himself to become the flesh of a newborn baby boy. Then, as a man preaching the gospel to multitudes, He obediently allowed Himself to take on the sins of the world and died after excruciating torture on a cross. He became the Savior of the world...for all eternity, because He rose from the dead and took His seat on His throne once again, at the right hand of His Father in heaven.

He completed the work He came to earth to do. He said, "It is finished." (John 19:30)

He won the victory for us. He really did destroy the works of the devil. (I John 3:8). That is why we lift our hearts, our hands, our voices and gratefully sing. Jesus truly is the Reason for the Season!

Celebrate Christmas!
