Whatever

So whether you eat or drink of whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
1 Corinthians 10:31

After spending my quiet time in prayer and Bible study in my office, I walked downstairs to the kitchen to make smoothies for my precious Don and me. I glanced at the dishwasher that needed to be emptied of clean dishes.

Whatever.

But then, since I had sought God's word to help me have the right thoughts and mindset for the day, the verse 1 Corinthians 10:31 popped into my head, "So whatever you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God."

And I thought, "Wow, yes! That's the way to have a healthy thought life! Think about God and not about me! How refreshing! LOL! But seriously, Sisters, am I the only one who doesn't always see the value in loading the dishwasher or sweeping the kitchen floor, or folding those clean clothes just plucked out of the dryer?

Ah-hah! It matters to God! Whatever we do matters to God! Duh. We matter to God. Everything we do matters to God! He created us and watches over us as we live for His glory here on earth! So quickly I thanked Him I could walk down the stairs and come into the kitchen to make our drinks, empty the dishwasher and fold the clean clothes. Yes, I did. And I was quickly refreshed with the mindset change.

While the blender was roaring on the kitchen counter to create our morning smoothies of fruit, protein powder, and almond milk, I shared my morning enlightenment with Don.

I said, "Wow. What a wonderful and wise way to go through the day, to be aware that whatever I do, I should see God in it and be thankful I can serve Him with who He has made me to be! Whatever it is, I do it with excellence and praise."

Don quickly said, "That's like Brother Lawrence, that's how he lived."

Yes! He radiated with a humble yet powerful prayer life as a monk in a monastery in Paris in the 1600s. His biography was recorded in a book called, The Practice of the Presence of God.

I knew we had a copy of the spiritual classic in our bookshelves, Don and I both read this remarkable account of his life and his deep passion to glorify God with every minute of his life. The fruit of his faithfulness produced tremendous peace, love, and joy in everything he did. He was always quick to repent of any sin and prayed his way through every day!

Yes, I found our copy and I'm amazed at his passionate desire to sense God's intimate presence in whatever he was doing. He tirelessly worked in the monastery kitchen.

Here are his words:  "In the way of God," he said, "thoughts count for little, love does everything. And it is not necessary to have great things to do. I turn my little omelet in the pan for the love of God: when it is finished, if I have nothing to do, I prostrate myself on the ground and adore my God, who gave me the grace to make it, after which I arise, more content than a king. When I cannot do anything else, it is enough for me to have lifted a straw from the earth for the love of God."

For over 300 years his testimony has inspired the world. He didn't seek his own fame or fortune. He lived for his Lord's fame. Wow.

Here's a quote from the back of the book, " I am doing now what I will do for all eternity. I am blessing God, praising Him, adoring Him, and loving Him with all my heart."

That is a quote from a monastery cook whose testimony of grace continues to be heard around the world. May we live so freely in our faithfulness so we will bring glory to God every day in whatever we do, too.
