To Faithfully Pray is a Heart Choice.

Think about prayer for a moment.

Seriously, why is it so hard for us to pray? You know, the faithful, fervent kind of praying of those warrior women who meet God in their prayer closets and/or look forward to gathering with a small group of the sisterhood to bow the knee and passionately call on God. Those church ladies. Uh-huh.

Maybe it's hard for us to pray because:

  • We have to deny ourselves in order to pray.

  • It's work to pray. Yes, it is! But as Christians we should be seeing prayer as a labor of love; love for God and love for people.

  • To pray we have to give up the temptations that call us away from spending devotional time with God. "I don't have time in my busy schedule to pray." Really?  Wow.

  • To pray we have to momentarily put down our cell phones to keep from checking for social media updates.

  • To pray we have to stop our hamster wheel lifestyle -- maybe get up a little earlier -- move our attention heavenward in seeking the face of God.

To pray is a heart choice. Will we plan to pray and choose to postpone that tempting trip to the outlet mall, resist the self-induced urgency to recolor roots at the hair stylist, miss a favorite TV show, or schedule that date with a friend at a time there isn't a prayer gathering that is calling our name?

Or will we say that we just don't have the time? But I know we girls always seem to be able to find the time to do what we really want to do, don't we?

However, what are we teaching our own daughters, and/or the younger generations of the daughters in the church--the body of Christ? What are we teaching them as they see what truly matters to us? Are we showing them we believe there is no greater love and power in heaven or earth than God's power? That's why we pray, isn't it? Are we showing them God's glory matters? That people matter? That life matters? That His church matters?

Are we showing the precious millennials how to overcome and to pray about everything?
"Do not be anxious about anything but in everything, with prayer and petition, with thanksgiving present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:6-8). They need to be equipped with this spiritual arsenal for their own lives!

"Then Jesus told His disciples a parable to show
them that they should always pray and not give
up...And the Lord said, "Will not God bring about
justice for His chosen ones, who cry out to Him day
and night? Will He keep putting them off? I tell you,
He will see that they get justice, and quickly."
(Luke 18:1, 7-8).

God makes our prayers powerful.  But we've got to pray to see this promise fulfilled: "The fervent, effectual prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective." (James 5:16)
