The Wisdom Lady

I've met the wisdom lady.

I first met her many years ago in the book of Proverbs. God had just opened my heart to know Him so I was ready for the wisdom lady to open her heart to me! When I read her practical, rich words of life I thought to myself. "Wow. Really? This is powerful. This is good stuff. This is so simple and wonderful...and these beautiful promises!"

Yep. Since then she's become a mentor to my soul. But not before God sent me through many painful storms and dark valleys over the years to show me it was not wise for me to try to control my little world. Hah! I admit it. Control issues cause pain. It means we're trusting in ourselves instead of trusting in God.Yikes. That's called idolatry!

But I hope I've become a teachable, willing student. I will say I'm wholeheartedly convinced that to be hungry for wisdom is how to receive her holy hospitality! The wisdom lady promises to nourish our famished souls!
We see she "has built her house; and prepared her meat and her wine; she has also set her table. She has sent out her servants, and she calls from the highest point of the city, 'Let all who are simple come to my house!'" (Proverbs 9:1-4)  [Wisdom's gifts are described symbolically as a great banquet. NIV commentary.]

She only speaks truth. "Does not wisdom call out? Does not understanding raise her voice? Listen, for I have trustworthy things to say; I open my lips to speak what is right. My mouth speaks what is true, for my lips detest wickedness. All of the words of my mouth are just; none of them is crooked or perverse" (Proverbs 8:1,6-8).

She dwells throughout the Old and New Testaments of the Bible because "all Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work" (2 Timothy 3:16-17). And that's what the wisdom lady does to our hearts if we're humble enough to listen.

The wisdom lady will mentor anyone who seeks her. I am speaking from experience, Sisters!  Seek God relentlessly, read His word, pray for wisdom, and wisdom will speak into your soul.

The wisdom lady offers gifts money can't buy. "Blessed are those who find wisdom, those who gain understanding, for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold. She is more precious than rubies, nothing you desire can compare with her. Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace" (Proverbs 3:13-17).

We need wisdom to honor God. We need wisdom to raise our children. We need wisdom in our relationships. We need wisdom in business and in ministry. We need wisdom to run our lives well. We need wisdom in making decisions. "Wisdom makes one wise person more powerful than ten rulers in a city." (Ecclesiastes 7:19). So where do we get this supernatural gift?

God. God is wisdom. Jesus is wisdom. The Holy Spirit is wisdom. The wisdom lady in the book of Proverbs is one of  our teachers in Scripture. Yes! Yes! Yes! "By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established; through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures" (Proverbs 24:3-4).

God wants to give us His best. Are we giving Him our best?
