the devil is a bully

Image
God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. Submit yourselves then, to God.  Resist the devil and he will flee from you. James 4:6-7 The devil really is a bully. Think about it. Bullies are bent on intimidating their prey. Bullies say cruel things. Bullies lie. Bullies are tremendously insecure. Bullies make lots of noise with their angry threats. Bullies seek to control others to make themselves feel better. They stalk their prey and look for a weak spot to attack with bitterness. Sounds just like the devil, doesn't it? When children are bullied by other children they should run, not walk, to a wise, trusted adult for protection and to stop the cruel behavior. The bullied child should get help immediately in order to shine the light on the darkness of being bullied. When God's children are bullied by the devil we should run to the Father who gives us the power to overcome this evil -- He promises we can resist his wicked threats. We don't have to listen to the bul...

The Greatest Life Coach in the Universe

Image
GOD really is the greatest "life coach" in the universe!   Have you met Him? Do you know Him like that?  We usually don't know Him as a wise counselor who's available 24/7 until we come to the end of ourselves and realize we can't do anything without Him. And all of that comes from God's pruning of a child seeking Him for healing of the brokenness, generational bondage, and just plain foolish choices!  Yes! One of the many awesome things about God is that we don't have to make an appointment to meet with Him. Seriously. We just open our mouth and call out to Him. He already knows what we need before we ask.   (Matthew 6:8). He knows everything!  Jesus has all authority in heaven and on earth and it has been given to Him by God the Father! (Matthew 28:18) How do I know this? Personal experience. Uh-huh. Spiritual battles, struggles with sinful habits. Loving, relentless prodding by the Holy Spirit to change and let go of baggage. We have to discover-- in ou...

When Roadkill is a Good Thing

"To fear the LORD is to hate evil; I [wisdom] hate pride and arrogance,  evil behavior and perverse speech." Proverbs 8:13 Pride is a troublemaker. It silently slithers into our minds and blinds us to truth. Pride can weave lies in our minds before we're aware if we're not paying attention to our thoughts. And we can't hide pride because it bears fruit. Rotten fruit. Smelly fruit. Yep.  Pride is the enemy. It can lay eggs of anxiety, fear, jealousy, comparison, lies, unbelief, and fear of man, in our minds! But those rotten eggs can't hatch if we do what God tells us to do: "We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ" (1 Corinthians 10:5). We've got to crush it. Kill it. Pride is not from God. He warns us about it. "All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because 'God opposes the proud but gives grace t...

No Lyin' About a Lion

Image
"Do you see a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.  The sluggard says, "There's a lion in the streets!"  Proverbs 26:12-13 The Book of Proverbs.  It's a Spirit-filled treasure chest overflowing with golden nuggets of wisdom. God designed it that way. When He saved us He knew we would desperately need guidance of wise teachers to show us the blessed way to live for His glory. And so, we have the literal words of God written down for us in our Bibles. We'll always find gold when we are digging in the Scriptures, whether we're looking for advice or to gain more knowledge.  The Book of Proverbs warns of the dangers of living like a fool. "A fool finds no pleasure in understanding but delights in airing his own opinion"   (Proverbs 18:2). "He who trusts in himself is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom is kept safe" (Proverbs 28:26).  We have to decide. Do we want to be our own god and put our trust in ours...
